Speech and Language Curriculum

All staff, both teaching and nonteaching, are either accredited Level 2 or 3 in the Elklan Under 5s or Elklan 5-11s speech and language programme. Two members of staff are trained in delivering a Parent Programme called Let's Talk and three staff members are studying for Elklan Level 4, which is a whole school speech and language development programme. All Nursery children are screened by the trained Nursery staff using the WELLCOMM pack. Targeted children within the Nursery receive further intervention using the EYBIC resource, which involves 2 short sessions a week from 2 trained members of staff. The Talk Boost targeted intervention programme is also delivered by two trained members of staff to 12 identified children in P1-3. It comprises of three 30-40-minute group sessions a week, delivered over 10 weeks. The children complete a detailed tracker at the beginning and the end of the programme.

Garden Retreat

An enclosed courtyard has been developed as a garden retreat that doubles as an outside classroom where a gardener is employed to facilitate a healthy living project, supported by intergenerational volunteers who will receive accreditation in volunteering (Level 1). Children participate in safety workshops on safety at beach, on road, cycling and at railways, as well as engage in a positive outdoor growing and learning experience in the ‘Secret’ garden. The school is surrounded by large play areas offering ample space for a wide range of activities. There are also three stimulating adventure play facilities which provide age appropriate play equipment to improve the pupils’ play skills and increase physical activity as well as enhance the curriculum and the school playgrounds.
